St Nick’s …………… 3-11 Rathmore …………….. 0-9

St Nicks Team who won the Munster Senior
League last weekend.
By Finbarr Mc Carthy:
St Nick’s captured the Munster Senior Football Club League title with
a comfortable victory over Rathmore at Dromtarriffe yesterday. In the
end the winning margin was eleven points, and yet after just eleven
minutes of play they trailed by 0-4 to 0-0 and looked in all sorts of
trouble. Rathmore started brightly and with Jim Cronin and Daniel O’Sullivan
on top in midfield Nick’s were under pressure, as a result Damien Casey
pointed two frees while John Buckley and Michael Kelleher had points
from play. Gradually Nick’s improved principally because David Brosnan
and Paul O’Brien broke Rathmore’s dominance in the middle and the defence
in particular Shane Kennefick, Killian Spain and Donal Og O’Donovan
excelled. Robert Brosnan pointed two frees, Shane O’Donoghue had one
from play and now it was Rathmore’s turn to struggle, even after Michael
O’Riordan had their fifth point on twenty-three minutes.
Nick’s though were now beginning to assume control and their superior
fitness was also a factor. Paul O’Brien and Niall Harte set up David
Busteed, who troubled Tom O’Sullivan all through, and the centre-forward
scored a lovely goal, David Brosnan, Gavin Moylan and Niall Horgan added
points and Nick’s led 1-6 to 0-6 at half-time. Indeed were it not for
the excellence of goalkeeper James Hughes Rathmore would have been further
behind as he made two excellent saves to deny John Kearney and Liam
Leahy goals.
By the three quarter mark both sides had added three points, but Nick’s
were more composed on the ball and their controlled play eventually
prised open the Rathmore defence, with two goals in quick succession.
David Brosnan scored the first in the forty sixth minute with a powerful
run surpassed only by the quality of the finish, then team captain Paul
O’Brien matched it two minutes later with an equally impressive finish.
There was no way back for Rathmore at this stage and further points
from Horgan and Gavin Looney completed the scoring and an emphatic win
for St Nick’s.
