St. Nicks 0 - 3 Dohenys (Dunmanway) 2 - 12
Our senior team gave one of their poorest performances of the year in going down to a well prepared Dohenys team at Brinney on Saturday Nov 24th. The team lined out without Emmet Neville, Michael Monahan, Ray Considine and Paul Kingston, all of whom were unavailable but this was no excuse for the way the team's challenge faded in the second half.
There was little evidence of a one sided game throughout the first half. Dohenys looked the better prepared team but spirited play in all sectors of the field kept Nicks in touch. David Ellis made a welcome return to goal after a long spell out through injury and he was call upon to make a great save after 10 minutes. In front of him Shane O'Donoghue and David (Paddy) Cunningham were well on top of their men. In the middle of the field Paul O'Brien and Robert Brosnan were breaking even with their opponents. Niall Harte was busy at centre forward and David Busteed threatened to score on a few occasions.
The first major sign of trouble came in the twenty fifth minute when Nicks gave away possession in the forward line. Then a long ball out of the Dohenys defence caught the Nicks full back line out of position and Dohenys broke through for their first goal. Despite this setback the half time score of 1 - 3 to 0 - 3 did not look insurmountable.
Five minutes into the second half, a slick Dohenys passing movement led to their second goal and there was no way back for St Nicks. Fitness and match practice began to tell in the Dohneys favour and the ran out deserving winners.
