Match Reports March 2003

Iarnrod Eireann City Under 21 'A' C'ship: St Nick's 1-12 St Vincent's 0-11.

This was a very demanding contest and only a strong last quarter ensured us a place in the semi-final against the winners of the Bishopstown v St Finbarrs tie. Early points from Paul O Brien and Gavin Moylan settled our side, but St Vincents soon took over and playing with the breeze they opened up a 0-6 to 0-3 lead, Frank Murphy and Cian Barry among their scorers. Noel ODonovan then created a goal for Gavin Moylan and we were level, a number of chances were then lost before St Vincents added 0-2 to lead 0-8 to 0-6 at half time. It was a very close and exciting second half, David Goggin kicked two fine points but we were still finding it hard to shake off a dogged and determined Vincents side who played some lovely football and kicked excellent points. John Kearney made an impact when introduced and scored two points and the sides were still level as the clock ticked on, however we came good in the last ten minutes Eoghan Geaney kicked a mighty point, David Goggin and John Kearney added one each, before victory was sealed when Eoghan Geaney pointed a late free. It was by no means a vintage display but a win is a win and we had good performers in Tim Dennehy, Graham Callinan, Shane O Donoghue, and David Busteed. Team. Peter Cuthbert, Stephen Hackett, Shane ODonoghue, Tim Dennehy, Liam Leahy, David Cunningham, Donal og o Donovan, Graham Callinan, Paul o Brien, David Busteed, David Goggin, Eoin Mc Carthy, Gavin Moylan, Noel o Donovan and Eoghan Geaney. Subs used John Kearney and Diarmuid Dorris.

U21 Football: St. Nicks 1-10 Carrigaline 1-3

First trophy won on Patrick's Day. In a 2001 Premier Minor League Final, which worked out as an ideal match for our Under 21 team we defeated Carrigaline on a 1-10 to 1-3 scoreline. We made an excellent start to this game and a fine goal from David Busteed put us in a strong position, but the dismissal of one of our players allowed Carrigaline back into the match and they quickly drew level and thats how it stayed 1-3 to 1-3 at half time. The second half was all St Nick's as we overcame the numerical disadvantage to fire over seven points without reply to emerge as comfortable winners. Eoin Mc Carthy, David Cunningham and David Goggin impressing. Paul OBrien was afterwards presented with the cup.

Minor Football

Ballincollig 4-12 St Nick's 3-7. Despite been minus a number of key players this was a very encouraging display and we actually led at half time, thanks to goals from Barry Hackett and Graham Keane who impressed on his return to action. Ballincollig were the better team in the secod half, but Alan Dunlea, Ian O Brien and John Kearney played very well and with a stronger team on duty for the next game we can look with confidence to the coming season.
