LAST YEARS MATCH REPORTS

GLEN ROVERS 2-5 BALLINCOLLIG 1-3 Well done to our Under 16 team who turned in a superb second half performance which saw us turn a half time deficit of three points into a five point winning margin as we were crowned Under 16 B county league champions. the game wasa thrilling contest a tribute to two committed sides as they served up a superb game. Our girls showed plenty of spirit and commitment never letting their heads drop as they battled back to take the honours. from one to fifteen every body was superb but one must single out the performance from our mid fielder Sinead Gallen who broke the hearts of Ballincollig dropping back several times helping out her defence as they came under pressure while also setting up attack after attack with her darting solo runs. We got off to a great start with Sinead O Halloran converting a close in free inside ten seconds of the throw in but despite winning plenty of possession we failed to convert and we fell into arrear as Samantha Coomey fired the ball to the net inside five minutes. With both defences holding out under pressure scores were hard to come by, Sinead O’ Halloran cut the deficit with a point twenty two minutes in but it was Ballincollig who finished the half stronger Jennifer Ryle and Eimear O Sullivan pointing to give them a three point interval lead. From the restart our girls showed their determination as they pinned Ballincollig in their own half and put their defence under pressure but we had five wide’s in a row before Sinead O Halloran converted a close in free. Now with just two points between the sides the battle for supremacy raged on with play swinging from end to end both defences were again under enormous pressure Ballincollig goalkeeper Sinead O’ Sullivan denyied us on several occasions before the goal finally arrived Edel O’ Connell charging in like a flash to finish over the line after Sinead O Hallorans lobbing shot had dropped on the goal line. From the puck out we pressed again Sinead O’ Halloran pointing to put them two points clear but Ballincollig replied as Hayley Corcoran hit a point. Ballincollig came close to grabbing a goal but our goal keeper Alison Rea batted to safety out of the danger zone. Sensing a let we regrouped and swept down field Nicole O’ Brien struck a point before she grabbed the goal that clinched victory with five minutes reaming, from here to the full time whistle Ballincollig pressed but they could find no way past a Glen defence where captain Ciara O Keeffe led by example. Scorers for Glen Rovers: S O’ Halloran 0-4 (0-2f), N O’Brien 1-1, E O’Connell 1-0. Ballincollig: S Coomey 1-0, J Ryle H Corcoran 0-1 E O’ Sullivan (f) 0-1each. BALLINHASSIG 3-8 GLEN ROVERS 1-6: Disappointment for our minor team as they lost to Ballinhassig in the Tower View Developments Minor B championship final, the contest was a lot closer than the score line indicates and doesn’t reflect the closeness of the contest where the result was in the balance to the end. Despite playing against the strong wind we started well Sinead O’ Halloran opened the score with a point before Aisling O Keeffe finished the ball to the net. Sinead O’ Callaghan had three Ballinhassig points two frees and one from play but Denise Luby converting two free as we continued to hold the edge. Lisa and Emma Jordan had the lead down to the minimum and when Catriona Collins converted two frees Ballinhassig held a 0-7 to 1-3 interval lead. Catriona Collins pointing an early free to maintain the Ballinhassig led and when Sinead O Callaghan struck for a goal Ballinhassig were five points clear. We fought back well and resettled upping our game we applied strong pressure and struck three points with Denise Luby on target to cut the lead to two points. Now looking as if we would take over we made a vital error as we failed to clear as Orla Murray’s shot bounced over the line, two minutes later Katie Mc Carthy finished to the net and Ballinhassig had weathered the revival. And so disappointment for our minors who lost out to a stronger Ballinhassig side, well done to all concerned who worked so hard to try and take the title, with fourteen of the starting fifteen again eligible next year no doubt they we will work hard and be determined to take it that one step further. Scorers for Ballinhassig: S O’Callaghan 1-3 (0-2f) C Collins 0-3 (f), O Murray, K Mc Carthy 1-0 each, L Jordan, E Jordan 0-1each. Glen Rovers: D Luby 0-5(f), A O Keeffe1-0, S O’ Halloran 0-1. MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL GLEN ROVERS 1-8 BALLYGARVAN 1-2 Another superb display from our minor team as they advanced to the final of the Tower View Developments Minor B championship defeating Ballygarvan in an excellent contest in Ballygarvan. Heavy underfoot condition made conditions hard for both sides as they had to endure driving rain and stormy condition through the opening half. Denise Luby gave us a dream start with a superb goal and with our defence holding firm under severe Ballygarvan pressure we held our lead. Denise Luby added four points from frees and placed balls as we controlled the game but Ballygarvan's Aisling Byrne had their opening score when she pointed. We turned over 1-4 to 0-1ahead at the break and turned to play with the wind in our favour but it was Ballygarvan who made the early running as Lorraine Brown pointed a free and they continued to hold the upper hand with Rebecca Murphy finished to the net to put just two points between the sides. From the puck out we applied pressure Karen O’Connell and Sinead Gallen working hard as we came forward in search of score, Denise Luby points a long range free to stretch the lead to three point and continuing to absorbed pressure at the back they held their lead .Nicole O’Brien and Sinead O'Halloran pointed from play before Denise Luby converted a forty five to see us through after a tough battle. Ballinhassig will provide strong final opponets regraded this year from the premier grade they have blazed a trail to reach the final but our girls are determined to give a good account of themselves and it should be a thrilling final. UNDER 16B COUNTY LEAGUE SEMI FINAL GLEN ROVERS 2-13 VALLEY ROVERS 2-4: Our under 16 team booked themselves a place in the under 16 B county league final when they defeated Valley Rovers at the Camogie grounds castle Road Blackrock on Saturday last. A close opening half saw Valley Rovers open up a 1-1 lead inside eight minutes as they played aided by the strong wind. We settled with Sinead O Halloran pointed free and three minutes later Edel O Connell had us ion level when she finished superbly to the net. Sinead Fahy and Sinead O Halloran fired over point to edge us ahead but back came Valley Rovers Rebecca O Regan pointing to leave just one between the sides. Strong pressure saw us open up a two point interval lead with Nicola O Sullivan point and it was 1-4 to 1-2 in our favour a the break. On the resumption we began to extend our advantage Sinead O Halloran pointing before firing a superb goal to the roof of the net, stronger in all sectors we began to pull away Edel O Connell Sinead Fahy and Sinead O Halloran striking points before Claire Duggan pointed for Valleys. In response we fired over three points Leeann O Sullivan, Sinead Fahy and O Halloran finding the range before a late Claire Duggan goal for Valleys. As a unit we played well but with strong Ballincollig side waiting in the final we will have to be at our best. SEANDUN UNDER 15 CHAMPIONSHIP REPORTS GLEN ROVERS 3-7 BRIAN DILLONS 3-2: Our under 15 team who recorded another victory in the Seandun under 15 competition when they defeated Brian Dillon’s in an excellent game at the Glen Field on Wednesday last. Both teams must be complimented on their performances given that weather conditions before the throw in led to a very heavy surface but this did not deter two eager sides who from the throw gave it their all in quest of victory Maria Sheehan got us on the score board with an early point and with Sinead O Halloran also on target we opening up a three point advantage. Brian Dillon’s were on level by the mid way stage grabbing a goal and when they added a second we trailed by three points. Two points before the break saw us trailing by just one at the interval and on the turn over our girls upped the pace with Lauren Callanan giving a player of the match performance hitting three superb goals whilst Alison Dowling and Nicole O Brien also got on the score sheet, the victory ensuring the girls of their place in the final where we will meet Douglas. Team: N O Brien; S O Sullivan, S Busteed, A Murphy; L O Sullivan, C Hogan, C O Sullivan; S Fahy, A O Keefe; A Dowling, E O Connell, J Hosford; S O Halloran, M Sheehan L Callanan.

UNDER 15 SEANDUN FINAL DOUGLAS 5-2 GLEN ROVERS 1-4: Our under 15 team lost out to Douglas in the Seandun under 15 final on a horrific day for camogie. Torrential wind and rain made conditions miserable for two teams who must be complimented on performing on such a day. Douglas made good use of the gale force wind in the first half and laid the foundations for victory grabbing four goals despite playing against the wind we had plenty of possession but failed to make use of it. On the resumption we applied fierce pressure and put the Douglas defence under severe pressure however despite a spirited performance we failed to catch up, well done to every one on great display in such bad weather conditions. Team K Lee; S O Sullivan, S Busteed, A Murphy; L O Sullivan, C Hogan, N O Brien; S Fahy, A O Keeffe; A Dowling, E O Connell, J Hosford; S O Halloran, M Sheehan L Callanan. Sub K Arnold for S O Sullivan.

MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL GLEN ROVERS 4-15 MALLOW 0-3: Our minor team turned in a superb display on our home pitch on Sunday last as they booked themselves a place in the championship semi final. On the resumption we upped our game and with Sinead Gallen and Denise Luby in superb form up front we piled on the scores. In defence captain Lydia Cunningham was solid and reliable and she had plenty of help from Alice Keating, Lorna Crowley Zoe Buckley and Sinead Fahy, all in all a great team performance we ran out winners. Feile na nGael Camogie 2007

Glen Rovers 0-11 Courcey Rovers 0-0

After winning through from our section on Sunday last our girls put in a great display on Tuesday night as they battled their way to our first Cork Feile Na Gael Final. All through the game the girls gave it their all and while they will look forward to Friday nights final they will have a mighty job when they face very strong Milford side who defeated All Ireland champions Douglas by eleven points.

U13 A Seandun Final

Glen Rovers 2-1 Douglas 2-0

A thrilling Evening Echo under 13 A Seandun final saw Glen Rovers maintain their early led to the finish as they capture the title from holders Douglas. The strong wind favoured Douglas in the opening half as both sides made good use of the wide open spaces the new Glen Rovers pitch afforded them. Douglas applied strong pressure as they sought out an early score Rachel Baxter and Aine O Donovan prominent as they but they found the going tough against a strong Glen defence where Sinead Fahy stamped her authority from the throw in policing Douglas danger woman Claire Shine superbly. Aine O Donovan and Sinead Duggan enjoyed battle of supremacy with Aisling O Keeffe and Nicole O Brien as both sides worked hard to gain control, Glen against the strong wind dropping back a mid fielder to close down the Douglas attack who were finding it hard to get past the dogged home defence. Despite playing against the wind the home side enjoyed plenty of chances and it was as a result of strong pressure that they won a forty five metres free, captain Sinéad O Halloran striking magnificently against the wind and as defenders and attackers watched the dropping ball Edel O Connell quick as a flash got a vital touch to the roof of the net. With their noses ahead Glen defended strongly but the goal Douglas needed came six minutes to half time when Amy Twohig found herself unmarked on the edge of the square she made no mistake from Aine O Donovan’s cross to level matters. Both sides battled furiously to gain the upper hand Douglas had strong defenders in Ellen Shine, Amy Twohig and Alison Peate, while there was no passing Aoibhinne Murphy, Ciara Mc Carthy and Ciara O Sullivan in the glen rearguard. With half time looming Sinead O Halloran edged Glen ahead with a pointed free and it was enough to give them a slender 1-1 to 1-0 advantage a they turned to play with the wind to their backs. From the restart both sides gave it everything the commitment, passion and hunger for victory etched on the faces of the young participants as they battled furiously for their respective cause. One incident stood out during the second half that showed fierce determination, with her side ahead by the narrowest of margins Glens Shauna Busteed lost her hurley but undeterred she continued to chased her opponent and somehow managed to win back the ball. With the big pitch beginning to taking its toll on the young participants scores were scarce in the second half but that does not take away from the skill shown by both teams as Glen bombarded the Douglas defence who were now deploying the extra defender tactic against the elements. Ten minutes from full time captain O Halloran floated a long range dipping shot to the net and Glen were four to the good. Battling to get something back Douglas threw everything into attack and with Sarah Kavanagh, and Shannon Dempsey working hard they got their break Aine O Donovan striking an excellent long range effort from fifty metres all the way to Glen net. Now just a point separated them and the title was there to be won, Glen dropped deep into defence to protect their lead and as Douglas drove forward Emma O Sullivan had to stand firm in the Glen goal before danger was averted. Glen quelled attack after attack as they held their lines while up front Nicola O Sullivan Maria Sheehan and Alison Dowling worked hard holding the ball as the clock ticked towards full time. It was Glen who were on the attack as Dave Daly sounded the full time whistle, credit must go to both teams who served up a magnificent game of camogie under trying conditions made easier by the good playing surface. For the victors celebrations as they took the trophy names after on of their former officers the late Nancy Hourihane who’s gran- niece Maria Sheehan played her part in their victory celebrations also for their joint coach Kelly Newman was the first player to captain a victorious Seandun under 13 champions winning side with the club ten years ago. Glen Rovers Mentor Dave O Connell paid tribute to his charges “We worked hard against the wind as Douglas applied the pressure, all the way up the grades these two teams have enjoyed tremendous clashes and today was no exception I am thrilled for our girls they worked so hard for today but I must compliment Douglas on a fine sporting game” Douglas mentor Helen Duggan while disappointed for her side praised their opponents “ We knew it would be tough but we gave it our all on the day we lost out but we congratulate Glen Rovers I know this means a lot to them and we wish you well, no doubt we will meet again in the season ahead and we look forward to that. “

2006 Congratulations

Well done to our representatives on the Seandun Under16 team Denise, Karen, Sinead and Alice that retained the championship crown recently defeating Carrigdhoun in thrilling final. We were honoured with the naming of Denise Luby as captain of the side and she led by example, her two goals in the first game ensuring Seandun were on the right road and in the semi final against Muskerry she showed nerves of steel to strike over a vital forty five metres free against the strong wind. Again when the going was tough she was in the thick of the action. In the final Denise played her part striking over three points while Karen O Connell was also to the fore in all three games. Alice Keating gave an excellent account of herself while Sinead Gallen when introduced showed just how valuable she will be next season when the selectors come to select the side who will be aiming for three in a row. Congratulations also to our selector Cathal Egan and his fellow selectors Pat Murray and Ann Mills on a job well done. Well done also to Lydia Cunningham who has been selected on the Cork minor panel and to Denise Luby and Karen O'Connell on their selection on the cork under 16 panels we wish everybody the best of luck in the season ahead.
