NICOLE TO REPRESENT CORK IN FEILE 2008 SKILLS COMPETITION Glen Rovers Camogie player Nicole O Brien will represent Cork at the National Camogie Feile Na nGael skills competition as part of Feile Na nGael on Saturday next June 21st in O'Moore Park, Portlaoise. Nicole became the first Glen Rovers player male or female to take a Cork Feile Skills title and go on to represent club and county at Feile when she was crowned champion for 2008 beating off stiff opposition. She is a pupil in Glanmire Community College where she plays Camogie she is past pupil in New Inn where she played both camogie and hurling Sciath Na Scoil competition. Nicole was also selected on the Cork college team this year and was a member of the Cork under14 team panel that won out the James Hurley memorial tournament recently. The holder of under 11, 13 and 16 honours with the club she is very much to the fore in all the camogie clubs teams while gaelic games are very much a family tradition as her cousin is St Nicks senior football captain and senior hurler Paul O Brien. A big contingent from the club is travelling to Portlaoise on Saturday to support Nicole as she strives to the best of her ability to do club and county proud. We wish her the very best of luck
Feile na nGael Camogie 2007 Glen Rovers 0-11 Courcey Rovers 0-0 After winning through from our section on Sunday last our girls put in a great display on Tuesday night as they battled their way to our first Cork Feile Na Gael Final. All through the game the girls gave it their all and while they will look forward to Friday nights final they will have a mighty job when they face very strong Milford side who defeated All Ireland champions Douglas by eleven points. U13 A Seandun Final Glen Rovers 2-1 Douglas 2-0 A thrilling Evening Echo under 13 A Seandun final saw Glen Rovers maintain their early led to the finish as they capture the title from holders Douglas. The strong wind favoured Douglas in the opening half as both sides made good use of the wide open spaces the new Glen Rovers pitch afforded them. Douglas applied strong pressure as they sought out an early score Rachel Baxter and Aine O Donovan prominent as they but they found the going tough against a strong Glen defence where Sinead Fahy stamped her authority from the throw in policing Douglas danger woman Claire Shine superbly. Aine O Donovan and Sinead Duggan enjoyed battle of supremacy with Aisling O Keeffe and Nicole O Brien as both sides worked hard to gain control, Glen against the strong wind dropping back a mid fielder to close down the Douglas attack who were finding it hard to get past the dogged home defence. Despite playing against the wind the home side enjoyed plenty of chances and it was as a result of strong pressure that they won a forty five metres free, captain Sinéad O Halloran striking magnificently against the wind and as defenders and attackers watched the dropping ball Edel O Connell quick as a flash got a vital touch to the roof of the net. With their noses ahead Glen defended strongly but the goal Douglas needed came six minutes to half time when Amy Twohig found herself unmarked on the edge of the square she made no mistake from Aine O Donovan’s cross to level matters. Both sides battled furiously to gain the upper hand Douglas had strong defenders in Ellen Shine, Amy Twohig and Alison Peate, while there was no passing Aoibhinne Murphy, Ciara Mc Carthy and Ciara O Sullivan in the glen rearguard. With half time looming Sinead O Halloran edged Glen ahead with a pointed free and it was enough to give them a slender 1-1 to 1-0 advantage a they turned to play with the wind to their backs. From the restart both sides gave it everything the commitment, passion and hunger for victory etched on the faces of the young participants as they battled furiously for their respective cause. One incident stood out during the second half that showed fierce determination, with her side ahead by the narrowest of margins Glens Shauna Busteed lost her hurley but undeterred she continued to chased her opponent and somehow managed to win back the ball. With the big pitch beginning to taking its toll on the young participants scores were scarce in the second half but that does not take away from the skill shown by both teams as Glen bombarded the Douglas defence who were now deploying the extra defender tactic against the elements. Ten minutes from full time captain O Halloran floated a long range dipping shot to the net and Glen were four to the good. Battling to get something back Douglas threw everything into attack and with Sarah Kavanagh, and Shannon Dempsey working hard they got their break Aine O Donovan striking an excellent long range effort from fifty metres all the way to Glen net. Now just a point separated them and the title was there to be won, Glen dropped deep into defence to protect their lead and as Douglas drove forward Emma O Sullivan had to stand firm in the Glen goal before danger was averted. Glen quelled attack after attack as they held their lines while up front Nicola O Sullivan Maria Sheehan and Alison Dowling worked hard holding the ball as the clock ticked towards full time. It was Glen who were on the attack as Dave Daly sounded the full time whistle, credit must go to both teams who served up a magnificent game of camogie under trying conditions made easier by the good playing surface. For the victors celebrations as they took the trophy names after on of their former officers the late Nancy Hourihane who’s gran- niece Maria Sheehan played her part in their victory celebrations also for their joint coach Kelly Newman was the first player to captain a victorious Seandun under 13 champions winning side with the club ten years ago. Glen Rovers Mentor Dave O Connell paid tribute to his charges “We worked hard against the wind as Douglas applied the pressure, all the way up the grades these two teams have enjoyed tremendous clashes and today was no exception I am thrilled for our girls they worked so hard for today but I must compliment Douglas on a fine sporting game” Douglas mentor Helen Duggan while disappointed for her side praised their opponents “ We knew it would be tough but we gave it our all on the day we lost out but we congratulate Glen Rovers I know this means a lot to them and we wish you well, no doubt we will meet again in the season ahead and we look forward to that. “ Teams Glen Rovers: E O Sullivan, K Arnold, C O Sullivan, L O Sullivan, C Mc Carthy N O Brien , A Murphy, S Fahy, A O Keeffe S Busteed, E O Connell(1-0), S O Halloran(1-1), M Sheehan, A Dowling, N O Sullivan Sub S O Sullivan for K Arnold (h/t) Douglas : S O Mahony, A Twohig (1-0), A Peate, E Shine, D Bevan, F Sexton, R Baxter ©, A O Donovan (1-0), S Duggan, L Cooney, S Dempsey, C Shine, C Hickey, S Kavanagh, R Cotter Sub A Fox for R Cotter(36mins) Ref D Daly
Congratulations Well done to our representatives on the Seandun Under16 team Denise, Karen, Sinead and Alice that retained the championship crown recently defeating Carrigdhoun in thrilling final. We were honoured with the naming of Denise Luby as captain of the side and she led by example, her two goals in the first game ensuring Seandun were on the right road and in the semi final against Muskerry she showed nerves of steel to strike over a vital forty five metres free against the strong wind. Again when the going was tough she was in the thick of the action. In the final Denise played her part striking over three points while Karen O Connell was also to the fore in all three games. Alice Keating gave an excellent account of herself while Sinead Gallen when introduced showed just how valuable she will be next season when the selectors come to select the side who will be aiming for three in a row. Congratulations also to our selector Cathal Egan and his fellow selectors Pat Murray and Ann Mills on a job well done. Well done also to Lydia Cunningham who has been selected on the Cork minor panel and to Denise Luby and Karen O'Connell on their selection on the cork under 16 panels we wish everybody the best of luck in the season ahead.
