Nick’s move on in County Race

St Nick’s 0-10 Naomh Aban 0-6 ANY talk of bringing the Andy Scannell Cup to Blackpool this year would be premature but there is no doubt that considerable progress is being made towards that quest. Last night in Coachford St Nick’s took another step in the right direction in the Evening Echo Cork Co SFC by pulling down the blinds on Naomh Aban’s year. In the process the city team advanced to the fourth round of the competition and also demonstrated that the good work of 2006 was no fluke. This was a thoroughly deserved victory and it was accomplished by a workmanlike display that had its foundations laid in the opening half hour. Naomh are never an easy side to deal with but St Nick’s set out their stall from a very early juncture in the game and the excellence of one player in particular in those opening sequences made a substantial difference in the game’s final analysis. Right corner-forward Gavin Moylan was a revelation in the opening 20 minutes and had a quartet of very good points on the board in that period. Nick’s had the aid of a hefty breeze in that half and they took full advantage of it while, conversely, the Ballyvourney side made little progress against it. Things did not start well for Naomh Aban with Micheal O’Croinin missing an early scoreable free and with 20 minutes gone they trailed by 0-6 to 0-2, Liam Leahy and John Kearney, from a free, adding to Moylan’s tally for Nick’s. Naomh Aban’s brace of points arrived from the boots of O’Croinin and Gary Mor O’Loinsigh. Anthony Lynch began well for Naomh Aban at centre-back but, clearly he was not 100/% fit and his overall impact on the proceedings was minimal. Robert Brosnan and Kearney added on two more points for Nick’s before half-time with O’Croinin making the final statement of the half with a pointed free for the mid Cork side. Throughout that first-half the industry of Paddy Cunningham at wing back was very pronounced for Nick’s and that was something that continued until the final whistle. We expected an onslaught from the losers on the turn over and two early points from Donnocha O’Croinin and Miceal O’Croinin reduced the gap to just three points after 41 minutes. There must have been slight concern on the Nick’s bench at that stage but they weathered the storm and again settled down to play some fine controlled football, carrying the ball out of defence very intelligently. In that defence Donal Og O’Donovan and Niall Horgan were very dependable and when Kearney pointed from a free for them in the 42nd minute it seemed to be just what was required to go on and take the match. They had a good chance of a goal shortly afterwards but Niall Harte’s effort was thwarted by the Naomh Abhan defence. However, as the half aged it became apparent that the Gaeltacht outfit were just not going to be able to breach the Nick’s defence for the goal that was so desperately required. Robert Brosnan kicked another fine Nick’s point from a free to restore their half-time advantage of five points. Paul O’Brien and Graham Callinan were working hard too around the middle of the field and with the clock starting to count down no impression was forthcoming from Naomh Aban on the board. Lynch did have a rasping shot nicely tipped over the bar by Nick’s keeper Peter Cuthbert and as events transpired that was the last score of a night that was late October in everything but name. Right at the death a 14 metre free from Micheal O’Croinin was blocked by the Nick’s goal line and that was that. Another notable victory for St Nick’s and further illustration that this bunch of players are the best to represent the club for a long while. They’ll be further energised by this victory for the next assignment against Aghada in the last 16.
